The Great British Summer has, to be fair been glorious up until Thursday 31st July when a yellow weather warning was issued for thunderstorms and rain. Normally the forecasters don't get it right but they mostly did on Thursday. The Stovold Trophy Teams from Hampshire and Surrey survived a complete monsoon like deluge of rain particularly during the morning Foursomes. F rom a Hampshire perspective the morning was a very good result with the pairings of Tracey Willmont-Coles and Chrisha Thapa, Tammy Rowe and Hatty Richardson all winning and Lucy Burke and Emma Powell halving. Hartley Wintney golf course stood up well to the buckets of rain dumped on it especially the greens. I swear I could see many players trying to manifest more rain at lunch time so they would not have to go out for the Singles in the afternoon but out they went - team spirit high as was the realisation that they were all in for another soaking. HLG were holding their Seniors Championship at the same time at nearby Army Golf Club but this had to be abandoned due to flooding on the greens.
The golf in the afternoon was exciting and good to watch especially if you were wearing pink. The Surrey team moved up a gear and played some pin point accurate shots but the Hampshire team battled and battled, however it was not to be as Surrey won 6 games to zero. Huge congratulations to Surrey for their spirited fight back. And huge thanks to each and every team player from Hampshire who played their best against first class opposition. It is a privilege to be your team captain and thank you for your team spirit. We go again on Monday 4th August at Highgate Golf Club against Middlesex.
I have failed in my duties as Team Captain by not taking a team photo before or after, my excuse is that most of the team players looked quite groggy first thing and then like drowned rats post match. So I thought I would spare their blushes !!!
